Mentions on Qerios: How to Tag People in Answers and Replies
How @mentions work on Qerios: the picker, searching by name or username, who gets notified, and why questions do not notify anyone.
Mentions let you pull someone into a conversation by writing @ followed by their username. They are a small feature with a few rules worth knowing, especially around privacy and notifications.
How to mention someone
Type @ in an answer or a reply and a picker opens. You can search by name or by username, so you do not need to remember exactly how someone spelled their handle. Avatars appear next to results to help you choose the right person when two accounts look alike. Select a result and the mention is inserted as a link to that profile. Mentions also work in bios, which is a good way to point to a friend or a team account.
Who gets notified
Mentioning someone in an answer or a reply sends them a notification. Mentioning someone inside a question does not. That choice is deliberate: questions can be anonymous, and notifying a person because of an anonymous message would let an unknown sender pull someone into a conversation without being accountable. The mention still shows as a link in the text, but nobody receives an alert because of it.
Private accounts and mentions
A notification should never reveal content to someone who cannot see it. If you mention a person in something they do not have access to, for example an answer on a private account they do not follow, they are not notified. The mention only reaches people who can actually open it. If you run a private account, this means you can mention friends confidently without worrying about leaking content to outsiders. For how visibility works, see private accounts on Qerios.
Good mention habits
- Mention people because they are relevant, not to get attention.
- Do not mention many people at once. A long list reads like spam and some users will mute you.
- If someone replies "please do not tag me", respect it.
- Avoid mentioning people in answers that expose their private details. The guide to answering without oversharing covers what to keep out.
If you are mentioned too often
You can control what alerts you through notification settings, and you can block accounts that keep pulling you into content you do not want. See take control of your notifications and blocking versus reporting.
Frequently asked questions
Does a mention show who I am if I send an anonymous question? No. A mention in a question is just text with a link and does not notify anyone, so it does not reveal the sender.
Can I mention someone who blocked me? Blocked relationships limit what the other person sees and receives, so do not expect them to be notified.
The short version
- Type @ to open the picker and search by name or username.
- Mentions in answers and replies notify; mentions in questions do not.
- Only people who can see the content are notified.
- Tag sparingly and respect requests to stop.
